"The Greeks personified Memory as #theGoddess
Mnemosyne. In an oral culture this is all knowledge, practical know-how, history, and mythology passed down.Mnemosyne uses the structures of narrative, song or myth to preserve. She loves repetition, rhyme and images that hold narrative together. She is naturally linked to a subjective idea of memory and mythical thought. Her goal is to evoke rather than describe. In this style, the factual and symbolic, historical and mythical, real events and imaginary happenings are all entangled. It’s an active memory which breaks into #consciousness
dreams, and myths, fantasies, symbols and art.She is a voice, a soul voice.Scientists study memory of the brain, the Greeks looked at memory from the heart.Through experience we sense that “the body remembers.”Psychotherapy is known as the great “memory cure.”Therapy became Mnemosyne’s refuge once we left oral culture. The therapist’s office is a rare place where we go to tell our stories; there we find someone who respects the subjective quality of memory. When a “therapeutic” tale concerns a whole group, we call it “myth” whose function is no longer simply to preserve memory in the form of a narrative but also to pass on its meaning for #collectiveconsciousness
. Just as I tell my therapist stories to understand who I am and where I’m going, myth asks: who are we, what is our story, and what does it mean to us?These memories which emerge seem like ill-assorted fragments. But these bits of string form a knot, a basic conflict that keeps coming back.#Hesiod
says Mnemosyne has the knowledge of what is, what will be, what was; the seamstress.Mnemoysne is not the Apollonian ego-consciousness of modern historians, she is the myth-maker weaving the fabric of our inner lives, whispering in the ears of the #Alchemists
releases the memory cure, introducing us to the monsters, heroes, great mothers and eternal children within us.Memory being a goddess can be put to sleep, but never dies."
