Here sits a healthy, smart, strong, growing toddler with no nutritional deficiencies completely fueled by plants! I often receive messages from followers who want to raise vegan kids but have been told by a family member, friend or pediatrician that you cannot raise a healthy smart thriving child on a vegan diet. No one wants to risk the health or potential brain development of their child and hearing something like this can make anyone bend values, go against logic and known truths, and revert to the traditional american diet. However, I’m here to let you know kids do not need to consume animal products to thrive. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics states that appropriately planned vegetarian, including VEGAN, diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and appropriate for ALL stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, adolescence, older adulthood, and for athletes.
I’d like to share a very special memory with you. It’s an important moment in our family’s history and it was a proud moment for my husband and I as parents. It’s the day our pediatrician said she is considering going vegan because of how healthy our kids are on a plant-based diet. I’ll be honest, she didn’t always feel this way. When I told her we would be raising our eldest son, Sage, on vegan foods only, our pediatrician was skeptical. She said if there was any indication that he was not growing or developing normally, we would need to forgo the vegan diet immediately, she also recommended we meet with a nutritionist (which we did). Since then, she is a convert. Our kids are strong, and they rarely visit the doctor because they’re so healthy and our pediatrician confirms our kids are thriving at every checkup!
Everyone does what they think is best for their child, from the activities they do at home, the classes they enroll them in, the schools they go it, and the food they choose to let their children consume. The most important role you can take is to educate yourself on what macro and micro nutrients your child requires and seek out the appropriate food sources. I think you might be surprised how easily you can do that on a vegan diet! #raisevegan
