"I am freed from the chains of the sea
When the tide reaches me.
Let's sail out forever. Let's taste
the stupidious song, the song spoken
By the Longer lips of desire.
Oh prodigious virginity.
The saltless breeze passes."
(Cesar Vallejo, Trilce, XLV)
I don't think I posted this one before (correct me if I'm wrong 😁). I bought this book a few months ago as a small birthday present to myself, and I adore it ever since.
Cesar Vallejo seems to be a major poet, but I have to admit I had never heard of him and I don't think I am the only one. And that's no surprise because his books are hard to get in an English translation. That's a crying shame, because his poetry is really interesting, it's deeply rooted in the European and Peruvian Indian heritage.
These poems were translated by Gerard Malanga, who is best-known for his collaborations with Andy Warhol in the 1960's (films like 'Vinyl' and 'Chelsea Girls' for example). Malanga started translating Vallejo in 1969, the correspondence with Vallejo's widow was very important during the proces, because she hated every other translation.
