Blessed bernhard 2 zahringen marfrave of baden beatified by the catholic church in 1769 for his famous efforts to help the poor. Born around 1428 at baden the son of margrave jacob and cathetine of lorraine and grew to be deeply religious and well educated. His brother karl married catherine habsburg giving the family powerful connections at the imperial court. He helped his uncle rene of anjou fight in italy earning a reputation for bravery. His father died in 53 and divided baden between bernhard and his brother but bernhard agreed to give it all to his brother instead becoming personal envoy to emperor frederick 3 a great honor. He saw the disgraceful condition of the poor and spent most of his money and time helping the poor and needy this and his piety impressed his contemporaries who saw him as a great man. In 53 after the fall of constantinople to the turks the habsburgs began planning a crusade and bernhard was sent to the many European rulers seeking support but died of plague during one of the visits in 1548 at moncalieri italy the people there still revere him today. His grave at st marys cathedral moncalieri became a pilgrimage spot for catholics its claimed miracle healings occur there to the devout. He was beatified in 1769 and in his honor the bernhardus fountain was built in rastatt its said he should have been sainted but it was deemed to expensive at the time. He became patron saint of baden baden in 1770 and the archdiocese of freiburg where a miracle is said to have accured also view his as its patron his feast day is july 15. Today there are still efforts to have him canonized as a saint.
