It was a pleasure to share my mother's story at BritBangla's "Adventures of Bengali Pioneers from Voyagers to Entrepreneurs" event last night at the Museum of London Docklands.
Before the event, I hosted a tour of the museum. Such fascinating artefacts on display related to Lascars. We also went for a stroll through the recreated streets of Victorian London.
Let's tell the stories of our parents. Their lives were very hard. Their experiences were different. The difficulties they faced. They left their families behind for a better life. We can never fully understand their sacrifices. Our mothers and grandmothers: let's make their voices heard. Some don't wish to speak of their past. Let's respect that too.
I will be sharing this story in Cambridge early next year.
Many thanks to BritBangla and Taryn Akthar for inviting me to speak at a wonderful and inspiring evening. Thank you to all those who attended the event.

Fort Benning Georgia, finishing up training and headed to Afghanistan in the next few months. I volunteered to go and feed the homeless and come to find out it was a surprise Thanksgiving dinner that a elementary school in the area prepared for about 50 soldiers. The kids had made us these amazing cards, goodie bags and served us dinner. Literally brought tears to my eyes. Being a brand new Solider in the Army or not. This feelings will never change and it makes me appreciate things that most will never take the time to even grasp. ----
----RIGHT: 2011 🇦🇫 Afghanistan- me during those next coming months in Afghanistan celebrating my holidays in a hell hole. But those very memories remained and kept me alive when my spirit felt like giving up. TRUE APPRECIATION! THATS WHAT THANKSGIVING IS ABOUT! Don't forget that! GIVE BACK! Not just overeat and sit down at the table with family. You can do that any day you please. ----
Even as I sit alone each holiday I'm forever thankful to be alone but home away from war in the UNITED STATES. I remain humble because I remember what it felt like to be over in Afghanistan for these special holidays. #HAPPYThanksgiving to all of my brothers and sisters that are fighting for our freedom. Who make it possible for you to sit down at that table and eat with our loved ones. Something so simple that's taken for granted but seems to only probably happen during the holidays when you should do it every chance you get. --
