Hey guys! I hope you're having a decent Monday. Today I thought we could talk about a legendary band that we, unfortunately, lost along the way. That band is Pantera.
⠀
Pantera formed in Arlington, Texas in 1981 by brothers Vinnie Paul and "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott and vocalist Terry Glaze. They were later joined by bassist Rex Brown and went on to release four albums until they replaced Glaze with Phil Anselmo in 1986.
⠀
They went on to release some of the most iconic heavy metal albums of the 90s, such as "Cowboys From Hell" (1990), "Vulgar Display Of Power" (1992) and "Far Beyond Driven" (1994).
⠀
The band began to fall apart during the recording of "The Great Southern Trendkill" in 1996 following Anselmo's addiction to heroin and eventually disbanded after releasing their last studio album "Reinventing The Steel" in 2000.
⠀
The Abbott brothers then formed the band Damageplan while Anselmo formed supergroup Down with former Pantera bassist Rex Brown and with members of Corrosion Of Conformity, Crowbar, Honky and Goatwhore.
⠀
During a Damageplan concert in Columbus, Ohio on December 8th, 2004, Dimebag Darrell was tragically shot and killed on stage.
⠀
We lost a legend that day.
⠀
Pantera was widely considered pioneers of what is referred to as groove metal, a metal subgenre that takes elements of thrash usually played with a slower tempo. Dimebag Darrell trademark low tuned guitar sound was also included in "The 50 Greatest Tones Of All Time" by Guitar Player Magazine.
⠀
My first memory of Pantera is the crushing and bluesy opening riff of "Walk" as well as the drum sound which has heavily influenced me personally as a drummer.
⠀
What is your favourite Pantera album and what is your first memory of listening to them?

Rufus Harley - "Scotch & Soul" (Atlantic, 1966)

Awhile ago, I listened to and gave my thoughts on Harley's debut, "Bagpipe Blues". I've grown a little more fond of it since then, I must admit. This is the follow-up, and repeats essentially the same formula. The same rhythm team of Oliver Collins (piano), James Glenn (bass) and Billy Abner (drums), is along for the ride, with the new addition of Robert Gossett on congas. Harley alternates between his trademark bagpipes and the flute, as well as tenor and soprano saxophones. There are more Harley originals on this album, and his writing is much better and more suited to his group. Gossett's congas accentuate the Latin flavor of several of the selections, and those with the most obvious grounding in that tradition are, incredibly, the ones that feature bagpipes. Honestly, it works better than I would have thought. My last foray into Harley's music contains plenty about the harmonic wackiness of the bagpipes, and the rhythmic spice of the congas with the Latin groove add well to the bizarre sound. In all honesty, though, I have to say that I still think the only draw here is my fascination with the sonic qualities of the bagpipes. Harley's sax and flute playing are really nothing to write home about, if I am being brutally honest, and I could extend that criticism to the rhythm section as well, particularly Collins, who seems as though he is cautiously site-reading the whole time, even during his solos. Harley's bagpipe antics are aurally fascinating, and I'd be hard-pressed to explain why, but I like them. I wish he would stick to the pipes, though, and hire a first-rate rhythm section. To be fair, I'm sure the latter was easier said than done.
