So I was talking to a pretty good acquaintance of mine yesterday, and she does arts (as in languahes, history, geography, that kind of arts.) And she had to make a powerpoint and the title of it was "Theories of Shakespeare's sexuality". To some of you, it might seem like I perfectly reasonable title to discuss. But what exactly is the objective when debating this? Well she said (if I remember correctly), it's like a liberal idea where he might have been gay, and used his plays to express his sexuality and all that. And as a result if it was the case, he was ahead of his time and helps with the modern day society and all that.
From what I've gathered, is basically using abstract ideas to form a very solid opinionated theory to convince others for someone's possible greater good, namely a specfic community. (I've a feeling I will get into a lot of trouble with this account one day.) While I admire these somewhat enthusiastic ideas about a certain writer of the past, I genuinely see very little benefit from spending hours upon hours arguing about something so abstrat and that's literally open ended and should not even discuss as it causes further inplications that could possibly damage his reputation as one of the greatest writers of all time. But that's just me and my scientific mindset.
Don't get me wrong though, I appreciate a good play, novel, movie or even music piece. I don't hate arts students, but the assignments and stuff they do are quite questionable at times, and others rather pointless so it seems.
What do you guys think? Any thoughts, opinions, and I really appreciate it if you comment, especially if you have an interest in this field and is/was an arts student. See ya!
