Preparing for a graduation ceremony, this young girl sits blowing her nails dry after having her hair and make up done by her mother. Her mother is one of two hundred refugees graduating in various courses of beautician, sports, english, sewing, IT and cooking.
Azraq is home to 36,000 Syrian refugees and as of this year, is the first refugee camp in the world powered entirely by renewable energy provided by it's solar plant.

Khadejah moved to Jordan five years ago from Homs, Syria with her three children. Now divorced, she is completely rebuilding her life- something she has only been able to do with a business grant from the Danish Refugee Council. Khadejah hand makes natural soaps using molds and research from the internet and has spent months experimenting with different ingredients and flavors to create a variety of soaps for all types of skin care. Although she is legally unable to own a shop in Jordan, she dreams to one day run her business from her own shop , but for now is happy selling her products at a reasonable price to women in the community around her.

Miriam* and her 8 year old daughter and 18 year old son live in Azraq refugee camp alongside 36,000 other Syrian refugees. She makes US$10 a day selling clothes which she makes after being given a business grant to pay for a sewing machine and some fabric.
When the family first arrived to the camp in 2014 after being caught by police in Amman, they were unable to do anything because there was no work and no electricity so everybody would just sit around in the street. Now that she has her own business and the camp has electricity she has bought a fan, a TV and a fridge that makes it feel like home. Miriam’s* son was happy in Syria studying at university, but here he has no work opportunities and suffers from trauma. The culture for her in Syria didn’t allow her to work, but now in Azraq she is making and selling clothes and has many friends who she meets everyday for coffee in each others houses. Now she is happy because she has her independence, is able to work and her daughter is attending school- something she was unable to do past the age of 12.

A group of Syrian women bring their young children along to a community safe space inside a refugee camp in Lebanon. Within this space, they are able to discuss freely their concerns for the community, their children, their marriages and their sexual health with other females living in the camp, all aged between 15-25.

Amneh is from Damascus & currently living in Mafraq, Jordan with her husband and two young children. When she first arrived in Jordan she became a teacher, but since having her children teaching became more impossible as she was unable to afford childcare. Now, with a business grant and training provided from the Danish Refugee Council, she has her own sewing business, which she is able to run from home and work around the care of her young children. Amneh says the grant opened a door of hope as she never thought it possible to have her own business and now she owns her own sewing machine, doesn’t need to ask for money and has made new friends and more networks in her new community.

Palestinian women protest outside Al Aqsa mosque before noon prayer after Israeli police add security gates to the entrance of Temple Mount, Jerusalem.
@luisa_wateridge here! Taking over float account with some of my work from across the middle east.
In July, Palestinians protested against new metal detectors and added security that the Israeli police placed at the entrance of Temple Mount, after the murder of two Israeli Police officers at Lions Gate on July 14th reignited uproar across Jerusalem and the West Bank.
Israeli police initially closed Temple Mount and prohibited entrance to Al Aqsa mosque, then added metal detectors and extra security surrounding the compound, leading to wide spread protests and violence as Palestinians accused Israeli Police of taking away their holy site which should be free for all.
Each day after the placement of added security, Palestinians prayed and protested on the streets outside Temple Mount and in front of the Israeli-West Bank barrier in Bethlehem, refusing to enter Al-Aqsa Mosque until the security was completely removed.
