‘Back in #Bucharest, most people associate #Romania’s capital with the megalomaniac Palace of Parliament. Instead, a more representative landmark for locals like myself is the Romanian Athenaeum, resplendent both inside and out. A classic stunner all year round, this is where in September, classical music takes over the city. Held in honor of the illustrious Romanian composer George Enescu, the @enescu_festival is a month-long classical music festival held inside the splendid Romanian Athenaeum. The performances are exceptional and the surroundings are, as you can see, nothing short than grandiose. Choose an off-season day to visit the interior. This is by far my favorite interior in Bucharest, one that holds many childhood memories coming here with my grandfather.' -- That's all for this weekend's #lpinstatakeover! ‘A land of rolling hills, snow-capped mountains and mysterious medieval towns, #Romania has no shortage of fairytale backdrops. #Transylvania is one such region you need to explore. Aside from the pilgrimage most tourists take to Bran Castle or the popular towns of Brasov, Sibiu and Sighisoara, go off the beaten path for the extra reward. Rimetea village is not one to be missed if you make your way down to Transylvania, an hour outside of Cluj-Napoca, a most stunning example of Hungarian heritage with white traditional houses and churches dotted alongside the mountain road.’ – @monicasuma, #lpinstatakeover#travel#lonelyplanet
‘"A city of firsts” is how I was introduced to #Timișoara in western #Romania this past autumn. The first city on continental Europe to have electric street lighting in 1884, and where in 1989, the sparks of Revolution against dictator Ceaușescu’s communist regime started. Due to its proximity to #Hungary and #Serbia and unique mix of cultures throughout history, the city was, and continues to be, a shining example of multiculturalism. Voted European Capital of Culture for 2021, @timisoara2021 is hard at work reviving the city’s landmarks, boasting its cultural life and more. There's never been a better time to visit.’ – @monicasuma, #lpinstatakeover#travel#Timisoara2021#romania
‘One of #Romania’s most scenic landscapes is the #DanubeDelta, a sublime wetland where the Danube River empties into the Black Sea after its 2800km long journey across the European continent. Nature’s beauty and wildlife abounds in every direction in this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The best way to discover it is on long boat rides on remote canals of incredible diversity, where during the early hours or at sunset you can spot egret, pelicans, exotic blue birds, wild boars and even horses. My most vivid memory came during sunrise, navigating through a maze of canals. A vision of silence and biodiversity, so serene and vast, flustered only by the sounds of birds flying into a bright orange rising sun.’ – @monicasuma, #lpInstatakeover#travel#lonelyplanet
This weekend’s #lpInstatakeover is from #LonelyPlanet writer and Bucharest local @monicasuma, who recently moved back to her native #Bucharest after 12 years abroad. Drawn by the urban revival and cultural effervescence, this former New Yorker is happily back to strolling through the back alleys of the interwar city, searching for its hidden haunts, delicious eats and ever-present festivals. Here she is in the tranquil courtyard lapidarium of the Orthodox Stravropoleos Church, a magnificent example of Brâncovenesc style built by Greek monks in the 1700s. – ‘The reason I love Bucharest so much is because of all its hidden gardens, tucked away behind stately mansions. Stavropoleos Church certainly holds one of its most beautiful. Join me this weekend as I share some of my favourite sights in Bucharest and #Romania in general, as I rediscover my beautiful country.' – @monicasuma#travel#lonelyplanet

'We stopped for brunch at F-Hoone, one of the most popular pitstops in Telliskivi. The interior was shabby-chic perfection, with huge windows that created Insta-worthy silhouettes, while the food was tasty and filling (go for the grilled lavash). Get here early or book ahead to guarantee you get a table.' – @sparkyseestheworld#lonelyplanet#lpinstatakeover#bestintravel#estonia
'One area of #Tallinn feeling the benefits of regeneration is Telliskivi Creative City. Once an industrial complex, the old factories now house hip cafes, art galleries and local businesses. There’s a flea market every Saturday, plus street food carts and a plethora of street art to enjoy. The best bit? The cruise-ship crowds don’t make it here… yet.' – @sparkyseestheworld#lonelyplanet#lpinstatakeover#bestintravel#estonia
'Linnahall looms on the outskirts of the Old Town. Once an ice rink and a concert venue, it has been closed for almost a decade. These days the decaying shell is frequented mostly by seagulls and photographers on the hunt for the perfect perspective shot. Graffiti covers every viable surface and weeds are reclaiming the stone staircases. I was enchanted by the architectural design and wind-whipped seafront location. The venue is set for renovation – so get here soon if you’re a fan of urban ‘ruins’! – @sparkyseestheworld#lonelyplanet#lpinstatakeover#bestintravel#estonia
This weekend's #lpinstatakeover is from #LonelyPlanet's Deputy Editor Emma Sparks, who will be sharing snaps of her recent visit to #Tallinn, our best value destination for 2018. 'Tallinn was an eye-opening trip for me. The cobblestones and spires I expected – but the rest? From modern street art and uber-cool neighbourhoods to edgy abandoned buildings and a varied food scene, this city is full of surprises. And it’s affordable too, despite being just a short ferry ride away from the eye-wateringly expensive Helsinki. Estonia’s capital is ideal for a long weekend, but no doubt you’ll want to return for more!' – @sparkyseestheworld -- Keep an eye out for more of Emma's Tallinn shots this weekend! #lonelyplanet#BestinTravel#Estonia
